After the success of Burger King's Impossible Whopper, BK has added another item featuring a plant-based meat replacement to the menu. This time, the meat free item is a breakfast sandwich.

The Burger King Impossible Croissan'wich is a vegetarian twist on Burger King's long time favorite croissant breakfast sandwich. In addition to a plant-based Impossible Foods brand sausage patty, the Impossible Sausage Croissan’wich features eggs and a slice of American cheese, served on a croissant made from real butter.

Aside from the Impossible breakfast sausage patty, this sandwich is identical to the Burger King Sausage, Egg & Cheese Croissan'wich. That begs the question which Croissan'wich should you choose to start your day?

If you're vegan, the answer is neither. The Impossible Croissan'wich is not vegan, even if you ask for no egg and cheese. While the Impossible sausage is made with vegan ingredients, Burger King cooks the sausages on the same griddle that they use for meat, resulting in likely cross-contamination. Additionally, the croissant contains butter.

For vegetarians, the picture is a little rosier. Everything in the Impossible Croissan'wich is vegetarian. However, as previously mentioned, your plant-based sausage patty may come into contact with animal fats on the shared grill.

But what about those simply looking for a healthier alternative to the Sausage, Egg & Cheese Croissan'wich? Is the Impossible Croissan'wich healthier? That's a question without a clear answer.

When it comes to calories, the difference between the two Croissan'wiches is small. The plant-based Impossible Croissan'wich contains 491 calories, just 4.5% fewer than the 515 calories in the regular sausage Croissan'wich. The Impossible Croissan'wich also has a bit less fat than it's animal-based counterpart, and both sandwiches contain a similar amount of sugar, sodium and protein.

However the amount of cholesterol is quite different between the Impossible and regular sausage Croissan'wiches. The plant-based Impossible Croissan'wich contains 45% more cholesterol!

On the whole, it seems like the Impossible Croissan'wich shouldn't be viewed as a healthy alternative to Burger King's Sausage Croissan'wich. Instead, it should be viewed as a meat-free alternative, which has similar nutritional value. That comes as no surprise. We reached a similar conclusion when comparing the beef Whopper to the Impossible Whopper.
